With 525 victories to his name, Eddy Merckx, known as ‘The Cannibal’, is generally considered be the greatest cyclist of all time. It was in La Gleize, in the province of Liège, that he won his first title.

Wallonia's roads always brought Eddy Merckx good luck. In 1962 he won his first Belgian Championship title at La Gleize, while still a rookie. Four years later, mixing with the professionals, he won the Cérami Grand Prix, just after his first major classic win at Milan-San Remo. Merckx went on to win Liège-Bastogne-Liège five times and the Flèche Wallonne three times.
