Vierves-sur-Viroin carnival

  • Folklore and Tradition
From 02 February to 05 March 2019.

Come and enjoy this picturesque carnival, one of the last folkloric processions in Wallonia.

An authentic tradition

The carnival lasts from Candlemas to Shrove Tuesday. This tradition, which dates back to the 12th century, brings everyone together in a cheerful atmosphere.

The festivities

The carnival starts at midnight on Friday with the drum procession. A masked ball will take place on Saturday evening. With Sunday comes the marching band procession.

On the Thursday, the children will have their own carnival, with music and followed by a roundel and a bonfire by the Restaurant Le Petit Mesnil, where a puppet will be burnt.

The following Sunday, at 2 pm, the soumonces will be paraded through town, joined by the marching band. They will leave from Place Albert 1er. Monday will be dedicated to the timers and the day following Shrove Tuesday, the D'jean D'jène and Relocteurs will join the festivities through the village and at its entry gates,

Shrove Tuesday itself will see the marching band leave Place Albert 1er in the afternoon and join the judgement scene. The evening concluded on the bonfire where a symbolic Johan Simon will be burnt. To be followed by the traditional giant omelette at the Les Echos du Viroin village hall.

Vierves-sur-Viroin is considered one of the prettiest villages in Wallonia.
