This new Long Distance Hiking Trail (GR) takes you from abbey to abbey, to discover the legendary Trappist beers of Chimay, Rochefort and Orval.
Explore Orval Abbey, the Abbey of Notre-Dame Saint-Remy in Rochefort and Scourmont Abbey in Chimay; as well as the beer and cheese interpretation centre at Espace Chimay, located along this 290km route, which is divided into two sections: Chimay-Rochefort (174km) and Rochefort-Orval (116km).
This is the first themed route designed by the Association of GR Hiking Trails. Fully marked, each section has its own distinctive character and the walk is suitable for experienced hikers and enthusiastic amateurs alike.

The Trappist label: Appellation Contrôlée
Among the twelve Trappist beers in the world, eleven bear the label ‘Authentic Trappist Product’. Three of these are brewed in Wallonia: Rochefort, Orval and Chimay. To be able to display this label, the beer must be brewed within a Cistercian abbey under the control of the Trappist Community, and it must be produced in a spirit of social solidarity and charity – a nice thought then that the more Trappist beer you drink means the more good you are doing for others. Cheers!
The Association of GR Hiking Trails
Founded almost 60 years ago, the Association of GR Hiking Trails has created a network of more than 5,000km of routes in Wallonia, marked in white-and-red or yellow-and-red.
Multi-day itineraries, day trips (15-25km) and family-friendly walks (9-12km). Download GPX maps free of charge or get the topo-guides directly from the RMS website.
GR path markers are permanent and standardised, so that hikers don’t need to keep referring to their maps or GPS. The markers vary: they can take the form of paint, plates or stickers - white and red or yellow and red lines on rocks, trees, poles or walls.
