Come and see the Saint Roch festivities in Thuin, with its folkloric march bringing the ramparts to life. This procession has been declared intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.

The history of Thuin Saint-Roch march

  • Part of the Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse marches, this military procession pays tribute to Saint-Roch, patron saint of pilgrims, brotherhoods and corporations.
  • First started when an epidemy of cholera devastated Thuin in 1866, this military now fascinates visitors.
  • 2,000 join the procession, most of them in costumes inspired by the Napoleonic times.

The march

  • Saturday evening: gathering on the ramparts in the Ville Haute, the lighting of the campes (rosaries of large firecrackers), torch-lit procession
  • Sunday morning: blessing at the Chapel, taking down of the relics of Saint Roh, stop at the memorial to remember those who have died in the war
  • Sunday afternoon, at 1.30 pm: start of the procession at the "Chant des Oiseaux" location
  • Monday morning: mass, procession towards the maladrie
