The South of Belgium chose "Wallonia, Land of Water" for its 2019 theme. To celebrate this, the Tourist Office of Tournai will be organising Vel'eau (Vélo = bike, Eau = water) guided tours in the region.
3 themes, 6 dates
May 11 and August 10: Rocks and water
Before flowing through Tournai, the Escaut travels through landscapes defined by rocks and industrial sites: lime kilns, picturesque houses, caves... The bike ride, which goes from Allain to Cherq will also explain how challenging the life of yesteryear could be through songs.
June 8 and September 14: Plains and water
After Tournai, the Escaut flows through a plain defined by wateringues. The bike ride will revisit the forgotten trade of ferrymen, taking passengers from one bank to another.
July 13 and October 12: Escaut Intramuros and the Small River
Many buildings and trades linked to the Escaut have now disappeared. With this bike ride, you will learn where the Chaufours gate and bridges are, how lime producers and tanners worked, how the Small River which for centuries played a crucial role in Tournai, was finally filled in the 20th century.
