  • The most beautiful villages of Wallonia

Nestled at the heart of the Hauts-Pays nature park, Montignies-Sur-Roc is a lovely village crossed by a former Roman road. Its pretty stone houses in the traditional Tournai style, paved streets, tree planted square and artisans are sure to enchant you. It also proves the perfect start for hikes.

The gem of the Haut-Pays region

Trough Montignies-sur-Roc runs a little river, the Petite Honnelle, and the former Roman road linking Bavay to Flanders. Its origins go back more than 1,000 years.  The village, dominated by the Notre-Dame church, owes its name to its position: it was, indeed, built perched on a rock.

The village unfolds around the pretty Fulgence Masson square lined with adorable houses, their architecture characterised by stone and bricks. From there you can see the Château de la Motte Baraffe: this typical Tournai style building was rebuilt in the late 17th century on the site of a 16th-century feudal castle.

The top and bottom of the village are connected by a network of footpaths and staircases. Other notable features include its former mill, the Petite Honnelle valley (a botanist's Eden), a man-made cave, the Chapelle du Rosaire, the old cemetery and its chapel, Notre-Dame de Cambrai.

On the sports side

Hikers will love the variety and beauty of landscapes in the area. There is a wide range of marked trails, perfect to discover the rich cultural heritage the region has to offer.

Artists and artisans in Montignies-Sur-Roc

The village is home to many artists, including potters and ceramists. Just to name a few...

  • the Brasserie des Rocs which brews extraordinary beers
  • the Ferme Pype and its lovely range of farm products
  • La Roquette, Plat Caillou - 2 ceramists in the same street
  • Céramique de Dour, a ceramist in the Rue Goutrielle
