Memorial Towns

Wallonia is remarkable. For its extraordinary natural landscapes, of course, but also its fascinating cultural heritage. We have selected 12 iconic cities as an introduction to the South of Wallonia.

Located at the crossroad of Europe, Wallonia is a land of memory. To reminisce the two world wars, you will find your way to Bastogne, Malmedy, Huy and Stavelot. There is Waterloo, too, known for a different battle, one that would change the course of European history. Caught in the crossfire of these three titanic conflicts, the region preserves the memory of those who sacrificed their lives in the cause of freedom with an evocative array of graveyards, memorials and museums.

Bouillon, La Roche-en-Ardenne, Rochefort and Thuin will help you travel further in time, all the way back to the Middle Ages and Renaissance, with tales of Belgian castles and legends.

Wallonia also is an open minded, multi-cultural region. The university town of Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve is witness to it. Its urban and particularly vibrant atmosphere reveal a scientific and cultural centre.
