The citadel of Dinant promises an incredible day out. Retrace 900 years history and discover the Meuse valley in Belgium.

The first fortifications date back to the 9th century. On these, Vauban built his own castle which was demolished to make place to this fortress in 1815. From its very top, the view over Dinant and its valley, one of the prettiest in Belgium, simply is breath-taking.

You can walk up to the citadel, climbing the 408 steps of its stairs, or simply jump on the cable car. History lovers will enjoy the visits of the dungeons, kitchens, carriages and weapon museum. Information panels detail the glorious past of Dinant, also known as "The daughter of the Meuse".

1914-18 space

In August 1914, the citadel witnessed heavy fighting between the French and German troops. A hundred years later was created a memorial to this important page of the Belgian and European history.
