Discover the impact of Shakespeare's theatre plays on the 19th century fine arts: a selection of masterpieces will be on show in Namur from October 21, 2017 to February 25, 2018.

One of the most famous British writers

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) is considered one of the best British poets and playwrights. In 1750, he is given the title of master of national literature. In the 19th century, famous literary work by Dante, Racine, Shakespeare will inspire romantic painters, who will study the way the authors structured and staged their stories.

Dramatic characters

The exhibition at the Rops museum will present the Shakespearian heroes who have inspired artists through the 19th century. Among these: Hamlet and Ophélie, Roméo and Juliet, Macbeth and his Lady, Othello and Desdemone.

Over 60 paintings, engravings, posters and sculptures of various can be admired through the galleries.

This superb exhibition is the result of a collaboration between the Louvre museum and the Eugène-Delacroix National Museum.
