This family friendly trail takes a slightly steep path through the countryside and the forests in the region of Vielsalm.

Cycle from the Maison du Tourisme towards Salmchâteau to reach Fosse Roulette, a spectacular opening in the relief which owes its names to the mining of schist slate on its side. One of the most remarkable sites of the region...

Quarries, in this part of the Ardenne, provided a whetstone called coticule. Sold to sharpen thin blades, it was known by barbers in Sevill, carpenters in Nazareth and tanners in Pau.

Life - both social and economic - revolved around this mineral in the region. The Musée du Coticule (Rue du Coticule 12, Salmchâteau) retraces its uses and story, which stopped in the 50s. Near the ruins of the Comtes de Salm castle, the path goes up, without presenting any challenge, towards the hamlet of La Comté.

The trail continues its ascension through the countryside and forests until Grand Sart. The plain, when covered with snow, will remind you of the Jura. From there you can cycle down all the way back to Vielsalm. Towards the end of the itinerary, you will pass the Doyard lakes: holiday vibe guaranteed.

Good to know

Every year, Vielsalm hosts the «Sean Kelly classic», a cycling trail in the regions for amateur cyclists. A stele in the name of the famous Irish sportsman has been erected in the city.
