Discover Maredret Benedictine abbey, a religious gem in Wallonia which overlooks the Molignée Valley.

A remarkable building

  • This abbey was built in a neo gothic style, from cut stone and limestone covered by a tile roof. The abbey's foundation was part of the wider monastic revival of the nineteenth century.
  • Land was provided by the Desclée family, and the first stone was put in place on 5 August 1891. The abbey church, completed in 1907, was one of the final projects of the fashionable Gothic revival Gent-based architect Auguste Van Assche. The interior and the windows have been described as remarkable. Later buildings were the work of a succession of local architects (Enseval, Paquet, Soreil et Durieu).

Visit of the abbey

  • You can visit this exceptional location every first Sunday of the month between April and October with a French guide. Tours in Dutch, German or English can be arranged by contacting the site in advance.
  • The visit includes the church and an exhibition on Cardinal Mercier's Pastroral Letter, illuminated by the local nuns
  • The Benedictines also organise spiritual retreats, calligraphy, Gregorian singing, aromatherapy, floral art... workshops

Itinerary

Coming from the centre of Maredret, take Rue Neuve Niole but do not turn left at the beginning of that street to turn into the Rue des Laidmonts: it is too narrow to go through. It is best to continue along the Rue Neuve Niole and follow it towards the Rue de la Bonne Fontaine, then go through the Rue de Maredsous. You will reach the Maredret abbey.
