With its vast garden, its funerary chapel and its interpretation centre, the Château de Boussu offers an unforgettable visit. This unique architectural ensemble can be found near Mons and the Grand Hornu site.

History

Owned by the Hennin-Liétard family since 1225, the Château de Boussu was built in the 16th century by Jacques du Broeucq to serve the ambition and glory of a powerful man under the reign of Charles V, Jean V de Hennin-Liétard.

The castle today

The castle is proud of an archaeological site and an entrance gatehouse dating from the Renaissance, listed as exceptional heritage of Wallonia - the only remains still visible.

The Interpretation Centre

  • Located in the châtelet, a renovated part of the castle, the interpretation centre presents artefacts from the Gallo-Roman era to the 20th century. You will also find a 3D reconstruction of the evolution of the castle over time.
  • The lapidary museum (the funerary chapel of the Lords of Boussu) is less than 300 meters away. Rebuilt in the 16th century in a Hainaut Gothic style, the chapel is features superb Renaissance sculptures.

The gardens

The estate, stretching over 12 hectares, counts hundred-years-old trees, a fascinating biodiversity and hives. Take a stroll along its sweet little paths to admire its lawns, ponds, gardens and varied foliage. The former pavilion is now a nature observatory.
