EDEN: European Destinations of Excellence

EDEN, or European Destinations of Excellence, aims at promoting sustainable tourism across the EU. The initiative is based on international competitions rewarding a selection of exceptional locations in participating countries every year. Per each participating country, one destination will be selected of the winner, alongside 4 runners-up for the whole of Europe.

Every year, the European Commission announces a new theme for the project. Eligible destinations have to prove their economically viable tourism offer based on that year’s EDEN theme (accessible tourism, local gastronomy, aquatic tourism...).

The following locations were selected in Wallonia, a region who has social, cultural and environmental sustainability of tourism at heart:

  • Ath,
  • Durbuy,
  • La Louvière
  • The Eau d'Heure lakes
  • Louvain-La-Neuve
  • Marche-en-Famenne
  • Viroinval
  • Waimes
