This former quarry presents remarkable stratigraphic cross sections from the lowermost Givetian (rock formation from the Givetian period). It is frequently visited by geology students from universities all over Belgium and anyone wishing to get a better insight into the field of biostratigraphy.
Man is thought to have worked limestone in this quarry from the 6th c. AD onwards, but there is no evidence of when the locals started exploiting the quarry. It produced a very fine-grained limestone with white speckles until 1985.
The site offers a fascinating stratigraphic cross section of 3 formations of the lowermost Givetian: the Hanonet, Trois-Fontaines and Terres d'Haurs formations. The Resteigne quarry is one of the geosites listed in the project application for a Famenne-Ardenne Geopark.
Practical information
The quarry is on a private property, which is closed to the public. However, the lower part has been left accessible to visitors and offers a stunning view over the various levels of the site.
Worth seeing in the area
Make the most of your day by taking a walk in the Ellinchamps nature reserve, enjoy the views on the Lesse Valley from La Roche à Pic, admire the Resteigne castle or take a look at the ruins of the hermitage which once belonged to the Count of Resteigne.
