The fort of Saint-Héribert was part of 9 built to protect Namur.
The history of the fort
The Franco-Prussian war (1870) ended on bitter notes. King Leopold the first asks General Brialmont to fortify both Liège and Namur. If military troops were to invade Wallonia from the East or South, the region would be able to resist efficiently. A number of forts (9 in Namur) were therefore built between 1880 and 1890.
The fort of Saint-Héribert (mostly in Wépion), together with Andoy, Cognelée and Suarlée, counts among the largest. Built at an altitude of 245 metres, it proves the highest fortified position in Namur.

Practical information:
Please note the temperature is a constant 8-12 degrees in the fort, no matter how hot or cold it can be outside. Warm clothes and good walking shoes are recommended. Strollers are better left outside.
