- Museum or Interpretation Centre
The Museum of Archeology of Tournai mainly presents objects of prehistoric, Gallo-Roman and Merovingian regional archeology.
Set in the old Mont-de-Piété, just 500 metres from the Grand'Place of Tournai and its Belfry, the museum contains real treasures from the primitive, Gallo-Roman and Merovingian periods.
The quaternary section traces the different stages of human evolution. Alongside local and peripheral industries, there are also several remarkable foreign pieces: bifaces of African origin, French lithic Aurignacian and Perigordian series ...
The Gallo-Roman section presents the excavations of the vast necropolis extending from the Grand Place to the Rue Perdue, with, as its centerpiece, a decorated lead sarcophagus, unique in Belgium.
The Merovingian section reveals mainly the results of the excavations of two cemeteries: that of the Park of the Town Hall and that of the Saint-Brice district where the tomb of Childeric I, the first king of the Merovingian dynasty, was discovered.
