The Welcome to camp America exhibition at the Photography Museum in Charleroi, will offer a different take on Guantanamo. American photographer Debi Cornwall was authorised to take a series of photographs there. She visited the site, nicknamed Gitmo by those jailed there, between March 2014 and January 2015.

Surprising results

To do so, she had to accept a number of strict rules: the soldiers' faces could not be shown, her pictures had to be checked on a daily basis... This exhibition presents them in three themes:

  • Gitmo at home, Gitmo at play: the gloom routine life in jail vs the relaxed leisure areas for soldiers
  • Gitmo on sale: some of the souvenirs sold at the camps' shop - such as a Fidel Castro figurine nodding its head
  • Beyond Gitmo: former prisoners, considered terrorist, freed or sent to foreign countries, all photographed from behind
