In Chimay, memories of the past abund. Alleyways, old stairs and abbey add to the char of this medieval town. Not to be missed, of courseT: its famous Trappist beer!
The Château de Chimay
The most remarkable historical building in Chimay no doubt is its magnificent castle, owned by the Prince of Chimay and his family have been living for over a thousand years. Enjoy a guided tour, with multimedia additions, of its 5 main rooms. This includes the guards’ room and the theatre built in 1863, a smaller replica of the Château de Fontainebleau, originally designed for King Louise XV.
L’Espace Chimay
Dedicated to Chimay’s Trappist beer and cheese, of course! This amazing centre offers a trail to learn more about the delicacies’ history. You will get to know how these are made and collect many anecdotes along the way. Either taste them on site or stop at the little shop there to bring some back home.
L'Aquascope de Virelles
This centre, built on the banks of the Virelle pond is a real invite to understand the diverse, preserved nature around it, a way to dive into the water world whether through a magnificent film screening or looking down from the many viewpoints.
Our favourite
The Pays de Chimat forest, starred with ponds and streams, shelters an admirable ecosystem. Make the most of it – there are many paths, including long hike trails, to explore it. Some bivouacs and shelters can be found there too, should you wish to spend the night in the midst of trees. Stays and wilderness workshops are also organised through the year.
